Week 2 - 8/16/2026
Week 2 is in the books. The puppies have all grown between 45 and 60% over the past 7 days. Maybird is eating A LOT; somewhere around a full week's worth of calories from before she became pregnant EACH DAY! She is doing a great job keeping the whelping box clean and the puppies happy, but also enjoys getting out and sleeping away from, though always within sight, of those voracious mouths.
The puppies all have their eyes open. It is interesting to see how the ones that were the last to be born are the ones with the eyes the least open for their 2 week photo shoot. Bryce (Magenta) seems to be the one doing a lot of the development first. She was the first to try walking, the first to open her eyes and the first to escape from the whelping box.
We've started to see more direct interaction between the puppies in the last day or two. They are nuzzling each other's faces, walking towards each other, and climbing up and over sleeping puppies. Their sleep positions are starting to look more like full grown dogs. We see lots of stretching legs, some sleeping on their backs like a true Chinook, and watching their legs move and hearing the little barks as they dream is adorable.
We've continued their daily sessions of stimulation with tickling toes, holding them in various positions, and placing them on a wet towel. Most have had their nails trimmed a few times, and all have been handled daily by our family and continued gentle visitors; including children.
The next week should see them all gaining their hearing and starting to explore different surfaces, the introduction of toys, and more.
